Fighting for North Devon District Hospital
Protect Local Healthcare
Ian Roome MP is leading a giant campaign to modernise North Devon District Hospital - which serves over 160,000 people across North Devon, Torridge and North Cornwall.
In January 2025 the new Labour Government announced funding for our hospital's rebuild under the New Hospital Programme would be delayed until 2035, after funding promised by the last Conservative government was shown to not exist.
North Devon District Hospital is the remotest hospital in mainland England, with too few Operating Theatres, an ageing Intensive Care Unit, and a layout dating back to the 1970s - which doctors describe as a ‘ticking time-bomb’.
Ian challenged the Health Secretary, and then the Prime Minister (three times) in Parliament: securing a Ministerial visit to our hospital.
More than 6,300+ local people have backed the campaign run by North Devon Liberal Democrats, adding their name to Ian's call for urgent investment.
In June 2025, Ian showed the oldest parts of the hospital to Karin Smyth MP, Minister of State for Secondary Care, to press the case for a new Surgical Unit.
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Ed Davey MP, also toured NDDH to meet NHS staff and pressed the Prime Minister on North Devon's case.
In October 2025, the government announced £22.7 million for Phase 1 of NDDH's ‘Our Future Hospital’ plan - the rebuild of new residences for NHS staff and medical students, making land available for the next stage of NDDH's rebuild.
The campaign for Phase 2 - the new clinical facilities - continues…
